I have been involved with community theater for the past 10 years.  Being a stylist at heart,  I always enjoy creating the diverse hair styles per genre of the show.  It’s not every day you have a reason to wear your hair in ellaborate Elizabethan plaits, or darling 40′s finger waves.

All that to say, this past June I was asked to be a hair designer for P.V.C.C.’s production of The Music Man.  Not being part of the cast this time, it was a joy to be able to devote all my energy to creating period hair styles.

The challenges I ran into were keeping the integrity of the style, while making them durable enough to withstand costume changes, sweat, and hours of dancing.  (Thankfully we had a week of dress rehearsals to work out the kinks!)  Many of the women needing their hair styled had silky/healthy/beautiful hair.  Where as this is IDEAL for every day styling, this quality of hair makes bobby pins slip right out without apology.  Hair spray was my close companion…

At Taglio we carry a variety of hair sprays.  Kerastase Double Force was perfect for prepping and setting the hair, as it’s soft enough to brush out, but durable enough to hold any curling iron work.  But the best part is, it protects the hair from the heat of styling and is resistant to humidity.  So we were protecting the hair from damage, and creating durable, sweat-proof hair styles that lasted through curtain call.

Styling Tips:

Next time you’re looking to curl your hair, whether in tight curls or loose waves, I recommend spraying Kerestase Double Force through all of your hair to prep it, then brush through it thoroughly.  Section out your hair starting with the hair closest to your neck.  Spray each section again as you drop the next section down.  Curl with desired size curling iron.  If you are looking to create a softer wave, you can brush through all the curls after they have set.  But be sure to wait until the curls have cooled or they may fall out too quickly.

In general, Thermal straightening (also known as Japanese straightening) permanently changes the structure of the hair molecule, changing it forever! Think of a perm, just the opposite You’re then left with a forever commitment to get your hair straightened when your new growth comes in and you have to touch up your roots with another “Japanese straightening” every few months.  The latest advancement in the straightening world has been over the Brazilian blowout or Keratin Smoothing. Keratin treatments have picked up this straightening name but in fact it is not a straightening service. It’s a smoothing service, promised to smooth your frizzy curls up to 95 percent! Meaning you can still wear your hair curly or straight. Both options would dramatically decrease your blow dry time, on average only taking about ten minutes. More and more clients wanted to know the facts, which was better? Which would last longer? Which one would be a better investment? Is it dangerous? Is it damaging? I decided to do further investigating on the Keratin Smoothing Complex when I attended a class taught by one of their reps. Surely she would have some answers to clear the air!

The Brazilian Blowout was first on my list of items to address. Although it is said to deliver the same results as a Keratin, it only promises to last up to 12 weeks and does in fact include formaldehyde. Which is huge and unnecessary risk to your health. The Keratin promises smooth un frizzy hair for 3-5 months although, if treated properly can last 6-8 months (with zero formaldehyde)! I would much rather have my clients invest their money into a longer lasting product. In general, Keratin Smoothing complex uses keratin that is found in your hair and infuses it back into your hair creating a semi-permanent treatment of keratin’s into your cuticle to smooth it out. This means that each time you need a treatment; the product would be applied from roots to ends. Different from any other chemical service, this improves your hair each time instead of damaging.

Because the product is made of 100 percent keratin, it is completely safe and even edible. I left the class feeling confident that I was providing the best for my clients.

Men really aren’t simple.  They’re into different music, clothing, travel and activities and are exposed to different work environments and cultures.  And, believe it or not, men are typically more particular about their hair than their female counterparts.

With Father’s Day quickly approaching, stylists, Donna Feeley, Kathryn Stanley, Molly Haeg and Tom Rough, sat down to talk about fail proof approaches to men’s haircuts….

Donna: “Guys are all so unique in their own way, so why is it, when they sit in my chair for the first time, I hear, ‘I’m a #2 on the sides and a #3 on the top’ [referring to clipper attachments]?”  Pull out the Flowbee-haha!

My guy clients are pickier about their hair than my female clients, but the problem is, they often suffer for ‘convenience.’  When my lawn starts to grow after being mowed straight across with the lawnmower, it grows back unevenly and the same thing happens to the men’s clipper-cut!

It’s about getting into the texture, choosing the right product to make sure there are no awkward growing out phases before the next cut.  A textured cut will never look obvious.”

Kathryn: “So true! And when guys go out for the  quickie salon haircut, where the hair is lifted by sections and cut straight across, not much different than the clipper-cut, at first glance it may appear to get the job done but, in a week or two, most guys find that it’s growing back unevenly and they have to go right back for a fix.  This is NOT convenient, and it doesn’t allow them to present themselves as individuals.

Some of my clients spend a lot of money on custom suits and some put in a lot of time choosing very cool and well-designed clothing. Sorry, but the square, harsh, clipper-cut with white-walled sides is an insult to good dressing!

We get great results because we take a different approach to each guy.  You have to take the time to study the hair’s texture, thickness, thinning patterns and, of course, get an understanding of what’s coming up in each guy’s life.  Is he going to an indie musicfest the following week?  A corporate event?  Is he preparing to run a marathon?

Understanding this earns the trust of male clients.  They know when we recommend a technique or product, they’ll look their best for what’s coming up.”

Molly: “Agreed… No two guys – or heads – are ever the same. You have to take note of a bump on the back of the head, balding or thinning patterns, each unique face shape and, of course, the texture.

With all the attention to detail on my end, I try to make it simple on his end. I ask guys about how often they’re actually able to come in.  If it’s every six weeks, I cut it in a way that will look great for that time, and educate them on how to style the hair as it grows out so it looks like it’s meant to be exactly that look. Guys appreciate exceptional results made easy.

It takes about a forty-five minutes to cut a guy’s hair and they seem to like the attention!  They see the value.  The confidence they gain with having their own custom look is priceless and life’s too short not to have it.”

Tom: “I like to call it the “handcrafted haircut.”  For guys, especially, texture is key for the shape of the cut to look great as it grows out.  This can only be achieved with scissors, a little more time, and the skills needed to do it right. I agree with the points about understanding lifestyles and schedules.  This way we know what products will make each guy look good the entire time before the next visit.

There’s pomade. Wax. Putty. Clay. Hair dress, grooming aid and gel…there are a TON of choices!  But guys shouldn’t have to work so hard to figure this out and they’re doing themselves a great disservice when they cling to the same styling products they’ve used for ten years.

I like to give guys a couple of product samples to try while the cut is still fresh and also for when it’s growing out.  Many times, men use the wrong products – perhaps the ‘ole cement-like gel – because they’re trying to hide a bad haircut.  When the cut is handcrafted, it looks great, and the products simply take that great shape to the next level.”
